Girl’s Guide To DIY Fashion…

My book is finally coming out this week – – I have been on ‘pins & needles’ since I handed in my last bit of edits to the publisher many months back. A year ago now I was finishing up all the preparation for the how-to shots, collecting inspiration for the photo shoot and more…it was definitely a whirlwind – so many emotions – excitement, nerves, overwhelm, joy!!!

Now the BIG DAY is finally here and my book will be available to everyone! What a thrill! I feel so lucky to be able to share my passion for sewing, DIY and creativity with girls everywhere!!

I wanted to share a bit about why I wrote the book and the journey…

Girl's Guide To DIY Fashion Book

First why I wrote the book…well back when I opened Pins & Needles in 2011 the teaching was really a small part of my business – – the focus was to create a unique retail experience – a beautiful light-filled and colorful boutique filled with an edited collection of fabrics, sewing notions, embroidery supplies and other creative materials – – it was all about inspiring a community to sew and craft…I wanted someone to walk into the boutique and instantly be inspired to get creative!!

Early on I was teaching small groups of kids to sew at P&N and in their homes…these girls began to tell their friends, and then they told their friends and so on, and the word got out and soon we were hosting kids/tween sewing and crafting classes every day of the week!

The three to four girls I worked with in the beginning has now grown into a community of young “stitchers”. It has and continues to be amazing! They all want to learn to sew and design – – some come once a month and some even come twice a week – they are hooked!

The best part is not only do I have the opportunity to teach these girls how to sew and craft – I get to encourage them to be creative, feel empowered to express themselves, be confident in all that they do, be excited about learning something new and even spend time with their friends and often make new ones.Girl's Guide To DIY Fashion

There is nothing like seeing one of the faces of a student after they have finished a project, after they have mastered how to thread the machine or even when they share a project idea they have and want to make – they totally light up!

It means so much to me that I can offer these young girls the opportunity to learn  to sew and craft and I realized that I wanted to be able to reach girls beyond the walls of P&N which is what my hopes are for this book! Like the projects we do at the studio, I wanted the projects included in the book to be modern, relevant and fun – – projects that the “girl” would feel proud to say they made and feel connected to!Girl's Guide To DIY Fashion

Girl’s Guide to DIY Fashion is the go-to for any girl that loves to be creative or wants to learn! From learning to make mood boards and fashion illustration to sewing up the perfect pair of leggings or party dress, this book will show the reader the basics of machine sewing, using a pattern and more.

Readers will design, make and put together outfits for their favorite activities – – Back-To-School, Fun-With-Friends, Slumber Party, Rock’N’ Summer and Going to a Party. A mix of sew and no-sew projects, each outfit offers the reader the opportunity to add their own “creative style”.

They can doodle their ideas, draw their designs on the exclusive croqui pages, color in the blank illustrations of each outfit and ultimately choose the fabrics and materials they will use.

Patterns and style tips are included and the best part is the girls get to wear everything they make!

Over the next few weeks and months we will be devoting a handful of blog posts to the book…behind the scenes, the DIY Book Party at Pins & Needles, a blog tour and more.

Here are a few highlights…

One of my favorite sections is finding your creative style and fashion design which includes tips on how to make mood boards, collect inspiration and then draw your designs
