The summer season might still be in full swing, but the team at Pins & Needles is starting to think “Back-To-School”! Our lists are growing with fun and creative sewing and craft projects to get ready to get back to the books in style!
Last week Rachel whipped up this adorable and chic pencil case. She opted for lots of lashes and bright red lips – very Audrey Hepburn don’t you think!
This projects calls for lots of creativity so why not design your own pencil case “face”. Think eye glasses, a bold mustache or even the face of your favorite animal.
What face would you make?
Here is a quick how-to for you to stitch up one of your own…
2 1/4 yards of fabric – one for the outside and one for the lining
1 9” Invisible Zipper
Assorted colors of fabric and felt scraps
Steam A Seam
Paper and pencil to draw the features
Step 1: Cut two rectangles – one of each fabric – measuring 9”X15”. Draw and cut out your features on your white paper (you are creating pattern pieces for your features), pin to your fabric or felt and cut out. Make sure to apply the Steam-A-Seam to the fabric/felt you have chosen for the features so you can iron it onto the outside fabric of your case.
Step 2: Sandwich the zipper in between your outside fabric and lining and sew in place. Fold the fabric so that the end of the fabric with the zipper you stitched in meets the other end of the two fabrics. The zipper should be in the center of your case.
Step 3: Now you can place the features of your face where you would like. Rachel put hers above and below the zipper. Iron in place – to really secure the pieces on the fabric we recommend that you stitch them in place as well.
Step 4: Stitch the other half of the zipper to the remaining two sides of the fabric. Follow the same steps as you did in Step 2.
Step 5: With right sides together pin and sew the two open sides. Make sure to leave part of your zipper open so that you can turn the case right side out. Trim your corners so they have a nice finish.
Now your case is ready to be filled with your favorite pencils, erasers and of course our favorite colorful Sharpies!
